Unbecoming to Become: Monica Rogers on Breaking the Trance and Reclaiming the Feminine

She traded perfection for presence, performance for purpose—and now teaches women how to do the same through radical self-approval, creative healing, and spiritual awakening.

Welcome back, Warriors!

This week’s episode of The Suburban Warrior Podcast features Monica Rodgers—a force of reclamation. A former PR exec and serial entrepreneur who “had it all” on paper, she hit a wall—nine months bedridden, a marriage in crisis, a soul that refused to keep performing. What the world called a breakdown, she recognized as a spiritual awakening—the moment she began her lifelong work of unbecoming: shedding the costumes culture hands women so we can reveal who we actually are.

Today, Monica is a coach, storyteller, and host of The Revelation Project, where she creates brave spaces for women to be fully seen and fully heard. Her lens is bold and tender at once: she names the water we’re swimming in—the trance of unworthiness, the thousand paper-cuts of conditioning—and then hands us tools to step out of it. Breath as spirit (“ruach”), body as compass, creativity as medicine. She reminds us that the body keeps the score and the map

Most of all, Monica is an invitation. Through storytelling, spiritual practice, and intentional creativity (including “medicine painting”), she leads women back into their bodies, their desires, their voice. This is inner work with outer consequences: steadier nervous systems, truer relationships, and a life calibrated to pleasure, purpose, and self-respect. As she likes to say, “Words create worlds”—and she’s here to help you write a new one.

The Unbecoming Playbook: 7 Things We Learned from Monica

1. Name the Trance, Break the Spell
Midlife malaise isn’t personal failure; it’s often the trance of unworthiness—a lifetime of conditioning to be small, agreeable, and invisible. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it—and you won’t go back.

2. The Four P’s Are Not a Personality
Monica’s red flag quartet—pleasing, pretty, polite, performative—keeps women exhausted and disembodied. Unbecoming starts when you retire those roles and ask, “What do I think, feel, want, desire?”

3. Your Body Is the Way Home
We’re taught to evacuate our bodies to survive an emotionally inhospitable world. Monica flips that script: breath first, body second, meaning follows. Breath regulates the nervous system, unlocks emotion, and restores inner guidance.

4. Approve of Yourself (Radically, Repeatedly)
Try her deceptively simple practice: “I was short with my partner this morning. I approve.” It’s not condoning—it’s ending self-abuse so change becomes possible. Pro tip: swap shame spirals for the phrase “Up until now…” to rewrite your narrative in real time.

5. Brag Like a Woman Who Means It
We deflect compliments; Monica insists we metabolize them. When praised, respond: “Thank you—it’s true.” Bragging isn’t arrogance; it’s nervous-system training in being seen.

6. Creativity Heals What Language Can’t
Through intentional creativity/medicine painting (inspired by teacher Shiloh Sophia McLeod), Monica guides women to make a first mark and witness the head-trash arrive. The canvas becomes a mirror—and a portal—to integration, joy, and flow.

7. Pleasure Is a Compass, Not a Crime
Stop outsourcing your “pleasure dial.” In midlife especially, let desire and delight help you decide—from hotel choices to bedroom conversations. A pleasure-led life creates overflow; a depleted life breeds resentment.
